About This Spot

Stepping into Filimex Asian Store & Cafe in Brunswick West feels like discovering a quiet little corner of Japan nestled within a bustling Melbourne suburb. The pace here is unhurried and gentle, inviting visitors to slow down and take in the welcoming embrace of a neighborhood spot where warmth and sincerity linger in the air. The modest storefront and hand-written labels hint at a place where care and tradition quietly shape every offering.

Inside, there’s a comforting blend of aromas and quiet conversations, where the fresh preparation of sushi unfolds right before your eyes. Watching each roll being carefully crafted, you sense a deep respect for the art of Japanese cuisine — an experience that celebrates freshness and simplicity without fuss. It’s the kind of place where the inevitable wait becomes part of the ritual, a patient moment that promises something thoughtfully made rather than rushed.

What makes this spot special is not just the hand-rolled sushi, but the human connection woven throughout the shop. Support and gentle guidance from the owner, who naturally helps with ingredient selections or shares a quick cooking tip, add a genuine layer of hospitality that transcends the ordinary. As you browse shelves stocked with Asian pantry staples—from Japanese curry blocks to imported snacks—you’re reminded this is much more than a restaurant; it’s a doorway to familiar tastes and comforting discoveries, a small community hub where diverse Asian flavors sit side by side.

Filimex invites both the curious and the regulars alike to enjoy moments that feel personal and unpretentious, whether it’s grabbing a quick, freshly-made sushi roll on the way home or leisurely gathering ingredients for a shared meal. There’s a quiet joy that comes from knowing each visit supports a local business where kindness and expertise quietly shine through.

I came in on ANZAC day public holiday for some fresh made sushi. The service was friendly and sushi prepared on the spot while I watched. Would recommend if you are in the area. You can also buy sushi catering by the tray.

This simple neighbourhood shop makes me feel so happy and at home. It is run by a kind Japanese shopkeeper who sells cheap but freshly handmade and delicious sushi, dim sim, and really good prawn wonton noodles. I was also so happy to get cheap beef buns that tasted so good. I get to buy ingredients and junk food from the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, and other southeast asian goods. It also sells NZ beef jerky that I love so much. This cute shop is

This place is such a great hidden gem. Frankly the sushi slaps. He makes it fresh to order and it’s always delicious and some of the best sushi I’ve had. Sure you have to wait for him to make it but god it’s good. The store also sells Asian grocery items so you can grab your Japanese curry block and ramen while you wait!

Great little suggested place to grab groceries suitable for Japanese cooking. I took a recipe in and the owner helped me grab items. (note handwriting on labels is mine) We also took away a couple sushi rolls to stop the hanger and they were delish! Also had a bit of frozen stuff too and gave tips on how to make one of the items they didn't sell (pre-fried tempura batter) which they sold the flour for anyway... Super friendly and pricing seemed fair :) Def visit again

Me and my best friend come here a lot. I also used to come as a kid. No bad words to say about this charming little store. The sushi is fresh and delicious and the man behind the counter is always lovely and welcoming. We love this place I highly recommend!

Nothing screams friendly local like this place. Takeaway Sushi is always fresh, but can get busy leading to a bit of a wait.. always worth it though

Super fresh sushi! Ours was made on the spot! The steam pork bun was also delicious, generous filling and love that it’s warmed in the oven so it’s ready to eat. Lots of snacks and Asian grocery items available. Lovely service too!
